“We cannot measure the speed of Coronavirus spreading accurately. But it seems to be faster than we thought. I doubt we have seen something alike before. Chance of infection is so much higher today than ever before,” said one of the world leaders on Saturday evening news briefing.
Capitalism spread all over the globe when borrowing money under lending agreements became a systematic thing. When big lenders were renamed to bankers. Sure, interests were modest in the beginning, but appetite comes with food.
Consumerism, the most beloved child of capitalism, — has greatly contributed to lack of balance within food consumption, resource depletion, and you name it. Even money falling from a helicopter cannot even out the existing imbalance. We need something smarter.
It is not about that the virus will transform our way of living in the long term. Or no one knows. It is the changes in the heads of people, what matters. It is also about learning how quickly we can “change the world”, if needed.
Three thousand six hundred dead as of March the 8th. Sixty thousand recovered. People unlearn to travel. Education system is forced to adopt the distance learning technologies. Working from home is turning from a privilege into a necessity. The world finds out how to cut back on its consumption.
Psychologists say coronavirus may improve situation with the mental disorders. Person forced to focus on external issues is less likely to have time for internal nagging and self-pity. The virus is also a great help against boredom. (Apologies for my cynicism)
I expect the epidemic to shake the capitalistic values. Hopefully, it will stop to be about what we are selling each other. It will be about what we are giving each other. Our interdependence has outgrown economics and politics, it demands reciprocity, compassion and inner maturity.
